Most tools in this category describe themselves as developer productivity platforms. The framing is understandable: productivity is what buyers think they’re looking for, and it’s what these tools tend to be sold on.

The problem with productivity as a frame is that it optimises for the wrong thing.

What productivity measurement produces

Productivity in software engineering tends to get operationalised as how much a developer or team is shipping, measured by some combination of commits, PRs, story points, or lines of code per unit time. These metrics are fast to generate and easy to compare.

The incentive they create is for visible activity. A developer who knows their commit count is being tracked will commit more frequently. A team measured on PR throughput will close PRs faster. Whether the code being produced is any good, whether it holds up, whether it accumulates into lasting capability or generates future rework: none of that shows up in productivity metrics.

AI assistance has made this problem more acute. AI tools raise productivity metrics substantially. Commit velocity increases. Lines added per sprint increases. PR frequency increases. These numbers can look very good while churn is rising and the codebase is filling with duplicated, short-lived code.

What engineering intelligence measures instead

Engineering intelligence, as Scryable uses the term, means understanding what a team is actually building: whether the code being produced is surviving and compounding, how the team’s output is trending on quality signals rather than volume signals, and whether the tools the team is using are improving or degrading the codebase over time.

The metrics that serve this understanding are different from productivity metrics. Churn rate, net lines versus gross lines, duplication rate, before-and-after comparisons to a pre-AI baseline: these describe the quality of output rather than its quantity.

Why the framing matters for what you buy

A manager buying a developer productivity platform is implicitly agreeing to measure their team’s performance in terms of how fast they’re shipping. The dashboard they get will reflect that frame, and the conversations it enables will be about throughput.

The distinction matters because teams optimising for productivity and teams optimising for engineering intelligence will make different decisions. A team optimising for productivity will adopt AI tools, celebrate the velocity gains, and remain unaware of quality degradation until it shows up in production issues or a refactor that takes three times longer than it should. A team optimising for engineering intelligence will adopt AI tools, measure the velocity gains alongside the quality signals, and adjust how it’s using the tools based on what the data shows.

A manager who wants to understand whether their engineering team is building something good, and whether the AI investment is producing lasting code rather than future rework, needs a tool asking different questions of the same data.
